Resilience in House - Climate Resilience in Community
In recent years, communities across Werribee have seen more heat, floods, and storms. Some people lose power. Others struggle to access food or check on neighbours.
But when communities come together, they bounce back faster. Whether it’s helping an elder in a storm or sharing food during tough times, community connection is powerful.
Climate resilience is about strengthening what already works in Werribee and making a plan, together.
In 2025, Wyndham Park Community Centre worked with our community to talk about what is important to community, share local stories and concerns, explore ways to prepare, respond and support each other, and shape a plan that fits our people and place.
These shared discussions between local people on common challenges that affect the whole community help build connections between individuals, relieving the isolation that they may experience and establishing networks of support.
Wyndham Park Community Centre climate resilience vision
Our community centre is strong, caring, and full of life. It is a place where everyone feels welcome, safe, and supported; where we can all grow and learn in our own ways.
Being resilient means more than just surviving tough times. It means learning, adapting, and becoming stronger together, like seeds that grow after a fire. We will share our stories, help each other recover, and celebrate new growth.
Together, we are planting a future built on kindness, diversity, and hope. A community that keeps growing and blooming, no matter what challenges come our way.
The Actions
Resilience Signage
Installing signage at points around the Community Centre and Shed that highlight climate-related solutions such as composting, recycling and water tanks. Simple and succinct signs with more information available on the WPCC website would be designed to spark knowledge and understanding for people who might otherwise walk past and not realise that resilience can also apply to them. This could lead to a more aware and inspired community.
Climate Change Adaptation Policy
Review existing approaches to climate change adaptation policies within social services and related sectors. Prepare recommendations for the adjustment of existing policies and evaluate the value of developing a stand-alone policy for Climate change adaptation. Doing this would provide the foundation for top-down, long-term and strategic support for climate action to complement grass-roots immediate term action.
Cross-Pollination Events
In-person mini-displays or showcases of hirers and users of Wyndham Park Community Centre, so that everyone is more aware of what happens here. This can help foster stronger and more diverse community links. It could also inspire new place-based community-driven actions.
INTER-AGENCY NETWORK
Inspired by the Hobsons Bay inter-agency network: advocate for reignition of the Wyndham inter-agency network where all kinds of local agencies (e.g. disability, health, housing, sustainability, emergency services, volunteer groups) come together to share information, identify problems and learn from guest speakers. Provides the ability to map local capabilities and resources (such as generators and community services). Participants would be better informed and connected with what's going on locally. More likely to be able to identify collaborations and actions for the community.
BIODIVERSITY CORRIDORS
Advocate with and to the council for increased tree planting, plant biodiversity and increased native corridors. Encourage a groundswell of community activism by finding places to bring people together for planting. Aim for increased biodiversity, particularly in terms of native plants, and empowerment for people.
