Our climate is changing, resulting in negative impacts on people’s health and wellbeing, and creating new challenges for households and services.
Network West is partnering with the Community Centres of Wyndham to support our community to prepare for and reduce the harmful impacts of climate change. The Flourish Project presents 4 activities where you can:
- strengthen local connections,
- hear about ways to reduce your impact on the environment, and
- gain practical information about preparing for a changing climate and extreme weather events.
This initiative is part of Network West’s A Local Approach to Climate Resilience project funded by Lord Mayor’s Charitable Foundation.
On Wednesday, March 27th, from 10 am to 1 pm, Wyndham Park Community Centre, Community Shed, and Tool Library event as part of the FLOURISH project, will provide a unique tour of what our local community centre is doing to promote sustainability and community resilience in Wyndham.
This series of events seeks to empower our community in preparing for and mitigating the adverse effects of climate change.
The journey kicks off with a metalworker from the Men’s Shed talking about the community restoration of a damaged mailbox at the community centre’s entrance, and what community members in Wyndham can achieve then they work together.
From here, dedicated community volunteers showcase the local food bank, and talk about our work with Oz Harvest – working to battle food insecurity.
The tour then takes you to the new Perch Café, as you enjoy a cuppa and hear about this social enterprise that utilises food from our community garden – and hear how the centre can support the local community in times of climate stress.
We then venture over to the Community Shed, learn about the Biodigester project by Open Table converting food waste into biogas and fertiliser – and visit the member-run bicycle restoration hub, which promotes fitness, waste reduction, and supports the disadvantaged.
The tour concludes at the new tool library project – “why buy where you can borrow?”, which is supported by Sustainability Victoria and Wyndham City Council, involving volunteers and fostering waste reduction, cost savings, and community connections.
Beyond its physical offerings, the community centre provides information, support, and advice, playing a vital role in contributing to a more resilient and well-connected community in the face of challenges posed by climate change.
